Heinz D. Lichtenberg, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, founds the business in a 400-square-foot garage tucked away in a suburb of Houston, Texas. At the time, HDL Research Lab provided product research and development for the energy industry. Heinz branded the business with objectives of innovation, perseverance, and responsibility.

1978

HDL Research Lab becomes incorporated and begins to specialize in the design and manufacturing of “downhole” electronics. The production of power converters that could operate at temperatures of +260 degrees Celsius help the business expand its outreach in the oil and gas industry.

Expertise in the production of downhole electronics allows HDL Research Lab, Inc. to make the transition from energy to national defense. Over the next year, the company re-makes itself to focus on the specific demands of those who serve America.

The company is recognized as a regional “Small Business of the Year” and relocates to its current plant in Brenham, Texas to expand operations.

HDL joins the NASA LITE team. LITE successfully recorded accurate data without damage for 9 days in September 1994.

HDL ships its 10,000th EPLRS unit.

HDL ships its 20,000th EPLRS unit.

The company receives a 10-Year Service Award for being on-time for 120 consecutive months.
